What is Piglets? Well, we are not really a B&B and not really a hotel – we are a luxury boutique stay with many of the facilities of a 5-star hotel but with the atmosphere of staying with friends in the country…great food, a bar to put many a pub to shame and loads of things to do to allow you to relax and unwind away from the rigours of daily life. You are only a click away from the Piglets experience and you will see why we have so many guests returning and such great reviews.
Book a winter getaway at Piglets from a night! (November to March)

Piglets, the movie
TAKE OUR STRESS TEST!

A note from Harry & Hamish
Hello, we’re our mum & dad’s two rescue Bagels (Beagle/Basset & possibly a bit of Terrier crosses) – this is our home so don’t be surprised to see us walking about in the bits we’re allowed when we’re not sunbathing .
So if you re frightened, allergic or don’t like dogs perhaps Piglets is not for you as we don’t want to be locked up all day like at the dogs’ home we came from (too many bad memories).
Also we’ll spend the day (& possibly the night) barking if you bring another furry friend into our home, so please, as much as we are sure they are sweet, do leave your pooch at home so we don’t disturb other guests.
Many thanks & licks, Harry & Hamish.

An oasis in the heart of the Essex countryside, an hour from London, 30 mins from Cambridge and Stansted
We are extremely lucky to live in a remarkably unspoilt corner of the English countryside with the three counties of Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk just 5 miles from us (for those old enough to remember, the BBC TV programme, Lovejoy, was filmed all around here in the eighties). The area is steeped in history and still retains its rural atmosphere and farming community - probably why the area consistently appears in the 'best places to live in the UK' reports - we do hope you will become a new fan following your stay with us.

Our awards!

What you can expect from your stay at Piglets
The ethos here is to provide you with facilities that you would expect from a five star hotel but with a feeling of being at your home in the country and part of our family for a few days. With our aim to make your stay with us as relaxing as possible, Piglets is for grown ups only, so sorry no under 18's or pets are allowed. Our food is home cooked and uses local suppliers wherever possible and we even have a fully licensed bar. There is a eco-friendly natural swimming pond, a gym, extensive gardens and patios, lovely walks and plenty of places to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. As the name suggests, Piglets used to be a piggery and home to some 450 Wessex saddle backs and large white pigs; this however ceased in 1968 and the building became a craft workshop producing the World's finest board games (which is still undertaken on site - more later) and then it became a family home. In 2019 after two years of planning and building it became what it is today, a unique luxury boutique B&B. We are totally independent and owner run - you will just see Chrissie, Max and our housekeeper, Nicky and of course our two rescue dogs; Hamish and Harry!

Rooms and suites
We currently have three ground floor bedrooms with private entrances, two of which have easy access and a further two rooms on the first floor, all en-suite doubles (3 of which can be made into twins on request)

Rural charm
We are extremely lucky in Wimbish to have more public footpaths than any other parish in Essex, which start directly opposite Piglets across our country lane. There is a hidden graveyard and a thoroughfare that offered 'the toffs' an alternative route to the manor avoiding the highwaymen on the main road. Our Hempstead bedroom is named after the neighbouring village where the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin was born. We have a wellie library, Ecuadorian ponchos, Brigg umbrellas and walking maps which you are welcome to borrow.
"We loved our stay here in the English countryside. The property is spacious and comfortable with plenty of great rooms to relax, read and drink in. The breakfast was completely delicious. Chrissie and Max are charming hosts. This was special in every way. Thank you both."
Historic local towns & villages
Piglets sits between two historic towns; the larger Saffron Walden just 5 miles away is one of the few surviving country towns which still has its market plan intact. Gone are the pig, cattle and poultry markets but we still enjoy a general market on a Tuesday and especially on Saturdays. The town, aside from hosting Cromwell during the English Civil War, offers a plethora of architectural gems, from Tudor to Victorian. It is also host to many an independent trader and has art galleries, a museum and the ruins of a Norman castle plus two mazes. Just 4 miles to the south of us lies Thaxted a pagan stronghold with a historic connection to Morris Men. The magnificent guild hall dominates Town street with the huge parish church looming behind and the famous Thomas Webb windmill off to the west. Smaller than Saffron Walden, it still has much to offer by way of individual shops, the home of Gustav Holst, who wrote The Planets there and a number of hostelries. It also has an annual music festival every summer. Nestling around us are beautiful villages and in particular the stretch towards Lavenham and Long Melford in neighbouring Suffolk includes the charming villages of Cavendish, Clare and Stoke by Clare. And just 15 minutes away lies one of the prettiest villages in Essex, Finchingfield.
"Very close to Saffron Walden which is great to wander around too. I just wish we’d booked for two nights rather than one!"

Relax and unwind
At Piglets we have tried to create a place where one feels just as happy relaxing with a good book and a glass of wine or using our many facilities; invigorate yourself with a swim in our natural swimming pond after enjoying a sauna (coming 2021) or indulge in a game of Snooker or Billiards on our full size table or battle over a game of Whiff-waff as some like to call table-tennis. Of course there are always the pub favourites of darts and table-football, perhaps a session in our mini gym will help keep your fitness levels up to the max? Or imagine oneself in a corner of Provence and play a game of Péntanque on our competition size piste while sipping a pastis on our French patio. Alternatively pull on a pair of wellies from our boot room library and enjoy a walk in the surrounding Essex countryside. You could of course simply lay back on a sun lounger by the pond or find a spot on our Mediterranean style patio and let your thoughts wander...
"Rooms are well appointed, beautifully decorated and the bed so large and comfortable I didn't want to get out of it! They also have AC, and (sorry eco-warriors) it was bliss as the day was very hot. Breakfast was a delight with a really good menu to choose from. Also to enjoy is the cosy guest lounge, a TV area and numerous outside areas to sit and relax and let the world go by. Max and Chrissie have created a unique B & B with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and as I was travelling on my own I really appreciated their kindness and I will definitely be back."
Fully licensed honour bar
Now here our friends think we are mad...lay on a full bar and ask people to jot down what they have drunk! Well, what kind of world is it if you can't trust folk to be honest and our guest experience backs this up. We are not a big hotel group or a faceless entity, it is just Max and Chrissie welcoming you to their home for a few days in the hope that you will feel part of our family and fully immerse yourself in the Piglets' experience which will leave you as happy and relaxed as you would be in your own home. The fact that we have over 50 gins, pre-made exotic cocktails and masses of wine and other spirits for your to enjoy, has nothing to do with it!
"What a perfect stay! Cannot fault. Luxury, such hospitable hosts, fabulous grounds and surrounding area, they’ve pretty much thought of every little detail to make your stay top rated, relaxing. Evening mixed fish/meat platter and the breakfast is delicious and home cooked - highly recommended, honesty bar is a lovely touch which is very well stocked. Overall a really great stay and will re- book when next down that way!"
Slow home cooked breakfasts and evening platters and pizzas
We are passionate home cooks, who believe good food should not be rushed, unless absolutely necessary; so we refrain from asking you what you want for breakfast just as you finish your last mouthful of dinner!
Everything is cooked to order and we hope that you will relax and unwind over breakfast and treat yourself to items you may not normally have time to enjoy in your daily life.
A complimentary spicy bloody or Virgin Mary starts the day off with a zing accompanied by Brittany pastries straight from the oven.
With a selection of fine teas; Lavazza Italian coffees or Chrissie’s hot chocolate, homemade granola, cereals and fresh fruit juices you will be ready for your home cooked breakfast which includes the classic ‘full English’ but without a triangular hash brown in sight – local award winning farm sausages, black pudding and bacon.
Perhaps an Arbroath smokies or an indulgent eggs Benedict might be more your thing?
All this is included in your room stay cost – even award winning smoked salmon from “the best smokehouse in the UK” according to Marco Pierre White without a supplement in sight!

In the evening if you just want to chill for the night with a glass of something and not worry about finding a restaurant and arranging a taxi; you could just stay with us and enjoy a pre-ordered deli platter or one of home cooked pizzas; relaxing in the guest lounge with a cocktail, a G&T from our gin library or select one of our house wines to go with your dinner.
"A great room, welcome, food and attention to detail... We called on the way to Chelmsford races, but equally handy for Stansted just off the M11. Only four rooms at present, but will be seven when Max and Chrissie have finished their work in progress. Awesome breakfasts and dont miss the evening platters. They are for sharing and one is ample for two people ! We will be back, what a fabulous change from the homogenised hotel chains...!"
